A while ago, Lobo (who is a music guy) recommended some high-level stereo equipment. I always suspected it was one of those cases where you don't get what you pay for. Case in point: it could never handle "burned" CDs. I got one as a Christmas gift from some graphic designers one year, and burned several of my own, and it couldn't play 'em. The cheap box we bought to play "The Wedding March" at our wedding (the ceremony was outdoors and the DJ took over at the reception) handled them just fine.

This morning, I put in Suzanne Vega's Retrospective and it started skipping every time I stepped away from the stereo (the high-level one). D started laughing. I tried running away right after I put the CD in, but it didn't work. If I stood there near the stereo, the CD kept playing. If I stepped away, it skipped.

So the cheap box is now our equipment of choice.

I'm making penne a la vodka tonight with 6-year-old vodka. Another Christmas gift, this one from my first job in New York. I'll put up the recipe if it's good ;)

I will concede that it does sound better than the box. I'm now using my "boom box" from 1993 (my brother gave it to me for high school graduation).

Mr. Lobo would like to point out that he didn't "recommend" that player. He got it for you for 25% of its list price. (Quite legitimately, I might add.)

Vegetable personalities

At the risk that you'll all think I'm nuts...but heck. I was getting cauliflower ready for dinner and it occurred to me that vegetables have different personalities. In my mind, anyway. The return of Rudolph

Rudolph is our small furry friend, whom I've never seen. He visited the kitchen last night while D was up late. I know this because: 1) A large sonic device is plugged in right in front of the crack between the oven and the wall. The sonic devices in the living room have kept Rudolph away from there, his previous hideaway. Apparently the cracks between appliances and the wall are harder to reach. 2) The mop has been moved from the hall closet to the kitchen closet. This means D tried to capture Rudolph. 3) A turtle magnet I haven't seen in a while is now on the fridge. That means it fell behind the oven and D found it during his interactions with Rudolph. (I am praying hard that Rudolph is a boy, since we don't want to find many small Rudolphs.) What makes me feel better about this whole thing is that mice are apparently everywhere this winter; even my brother has had problems with them. happy birthday e!

[Posted by Bearette's husband until she has Internet access] e was born today! 8 pounds even, a cute and healthy baby boy. He likes to stick out his tongue just a little, and move his mouth around. The hospital gave him a little white hat with a purple pom pom. Bearette is tired but happy. Pictures soon.
