I have to say I like Rachael Ray's new magazine. It's called Every Day with Rachael Ray (silly title, I know), but it has a lot of recipes that sound good. Such as:

macaroni and cheese with chiles (she says you can use 2 8-oz packages of any kind of cheese! Muenster and cheddar, here I come)

sweet pea risotto

stuffed zucchini

ratatouille pasta (minus the eggplant for me)

carrot soup (just baby carrots, ginger and vegetable stock)

and so on. She even talks about how her doggy, Boo, died and includes one of the recipes she used to make for her, called Boo-sotto. It contains veal, which ordinarily really bums me out (calves raised for veal are treated very, very badly), but I did think it was cute that she made recipes for her doggy. A lot of the recipes I can't make, because of their meat content, but she is pretty good about including vegetarian recipes and vegetarian versions of the meat recipes. So I think I may subscribe.

She even includes workable gift ideas! I don't know about you, but the usual suggested gifts in magazines don't really work for me: "buy days-of-the-week underpants for your family!" or "tacky costume jewelry for the one you love!" I can't say which one I'm going to buy for the fam, because CERTAIN FAMILY MEMBERS are reading my blog (hi, sis!), but it's a good one.

I know it's early to start thinking about Christmas presents, but when you have the following people to shop for:

Mom
D
brother
brother's wife
brother's kids (2)
sister
sister
sister's husband
sister's kids (3)

...you gotta start early. My Amazon shopping cart is already filling up.

I also bought some things at Old Navy yesterday: a magically comfortable pair of velvet clogs (I know, it sounds tacky, but they work), a pink T-shirt with a cat on it, a rugby-type shirt with thin stripes, and a present for somebody. I used my $10 off coupon; very proud of myself. D got a hat and gloves.

Veal is very, very bad. But I still think it is nice that she loves her dog so much. She is convinced they will meet again some day, and then she will cook for the doggy and the doggy will be ready to eat. And maybe she will cook her doggy something vegetarian then!

I know--I ate veal once at an Italian restaurant and all I could think about were these poor baby calves being raised in little cramped boxes with no light. So, I guess I should say I TRIED to eat veal, but it just didn't happen.

That and I was put off chicken for a LONG time after I accidentally switched on a PBS documentary about free range chickens vs. commercially raised. I'm over that one, thankfully, but the veal thing I will never get over...

I may have to check out the magazine, though. I like Rachael Ray, except she uses too exaggerated of hand motions.

Except it's Jake, not Jack. I need to keep my boyfriends straight. ;-)

It's never too early to start Christmas shopping.

Liz - Yup, Jake, not Jack. I knew what you meant though :)

Carolyn - I've already broken the 2 resolutions I made on your blog - I got a family member something at Old Navy (not online), and I'll probably end up getting more than 1 present for my mom and sis. Oh well!

I picked up the Rachel Ray magazine on your suggestion and some of the recipes look super yummy! And some of the meat ones look like they can be adapted easily.

I really don't know anything about RR because she emerged while I was out of the country and now I don't have a television, so . . . and she doesn't really show up in the gossip blogs all that often!

I've actually never seen her on TV, but I have her 30-minute vegetarian cookbook, which was pretty good.

Oddly, she also appeared in FHM (I read an MSN article about it). I think she just did it for fun.
