2007 has descended

We went out for Indian food at Brick Lane Curry House with our brethren (well, not literally). AT surprised us all by eating the Phaal Curry. Described on the menu with the words sweat and pain, the curry is so hard to finish that a free beer is awarded for it. AT downed the whole thing, even though his eyes watered at one point. In fact, he was such a completist that he ate the chile pepper at the bottom...even though the staff told him he had already won the prize. Once he sends in a jpeg of himself, his picture will be included on their website in the Phaal Curry Hall of Fame. Pretty cool, huh? His prize was a free glass of Kingfisher beer.

Afterward we walked back to the apartment. There weren't too many revelers on the street, though there were the usual groups of women in open-toed high heels. (It's winter, people!) At the apartment, D inflated our snowman, propped it up in the living room, and my sister-in-law, A, asked us to reflect on the highlight of our year. I had to say The Place, because the food was so darn good.

After the ball dropped, we watched an episode of Seinfeld and an episode of Coupling, which helped dispel the weirdness of a new year. The musical acts on the New Year's shows are always awful. The Coupling episode was about Jeff lying to a woman, saying he had only one leg...worth watching if you are a fan of the show.

The funny thing about the Phaal curry is, that once you get over the initial burn, it actually tastes kind of sweet! I actually want to go back for more.

Eesh. Good for you, AT. I'm an official wimp when it comes to spicy foods.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the New Year a little weird... it's always feels a bit depressing to me, although I can't explain why I feel that way.

Is AT sending a jpeg of himself during that half hour he had to spend on the toilet afterwards? :D

Actually, Carolyn, I didn't spend that long on the toilet afterwards. The p'haal curry scooted out with refreshing alacrity.

And yes, Bearette, you can get p'haal with vegetables or tofu. Let me know when you want to give it a go.

Coupling is one of the best shows ever. The episode of which you speak is one of the best! I also like the episode in the first series where Jeff tells the Israeli woman that he collects women's ears in a bucket. And the episode in season 2 where Steve inadvertantly gives Susan's mom a vibrator called "The Junior Patrick" (as it was modeled after Patrick's "Junior Patrick").

But I do believe the best episode ever was the one about Steve's porn tape called "Lesbian Spank Inferno."

Hee. Already saw the Israeli woman and the spank inferno. I have to say I like the one-legged episode the best so far :) We're working through all of them.

I've seen every episode. The first 2 seasons are the best but there are some good episodes in season 3 as well (Remember This and Captain Subtext both had me in stitches) and Season 4 doesn't have Jeff, it introduces a new character, Oliver. Oliver's humor is more physical than verbal (like Jeff) but the two are both somewhat clumsy with women. And there is one episode with Oliver that is absolutely hilarious (I think it was the 4th episode) other than that season 4 was kind of forgettable (as compared to seasons 1-3 that is-- it was/is still leaps and bounds just about anything on American TV) though.
