All right, I'm just going to spit it out. My news = I'm pregnant. 12 weeks today. Made it through the first trimester, some scary genetic testing, and now I just have my Down test to get through. If that goes well (it's a two-part test that takes a few weeks), I think I can finally relax. My odds are low. The test was optional so I seriously considered not taking it, but every single person whose advice I sought said she would take it, so I'll do it.

It's funny, I watched Rosemary's Baby last night (I've seen it before, but now I'm watching it with new eyes) and I couldn't help spotting all the infractions. She drank a shake with raw egg every day, drank some champagne when she got pregnant, and her husband smoked Pall Malls around her.

I guess there are tradeoffs. My mother's pregnancies sound entirely more relaxed than mine -- she smoked*, drank* (in moderation) and she didn't know what listeria* was. In other words, she could eat as much feta, brie and goat cheese as she wanted. *But* today you can find out the baby's gender in advance, you can hear the baby's heartbeat (I already have. Truth be told, it sounded stronger than mine) and see pictures of your baby via ultrasound.

I'd like to skip the tests, though. Fortunately, I think the upcoming one is the last.

I'm due in June.

*In case some crazy anonymous commenter stops by and starts ranting...let the record state I am NOT going to smoke, drink or eat unpasteurized cheese during my pregnancy. I didn't smoke and I hardly drank anyway. I do miss the cheese, though. Fortunately, I was able to have some cooked, pasteurized feta over Thanksgiving.

Congratulations! I am so happy for you.

It is what I thought. *smirk* I just wasn't sure what your feelings were about it.

I remember a flag went up when you started talking about *babies* as well as cats and dogs that you had seen during the day. hehe

Again I am so happy for you and wish you the best.

Congratulations - I am so happy for y'all! :) :) :)

(I had feeling this is what your news was...)

Just think, a mini-Bearette or D! I can't wait!

(I have to stop using so many exclamation points!)

Looking forward to hearing all about it...

I knew it! Or, at least, I thought it.

YAY! I'm so happy for you and D. How exciting! Congratulations!

I guess now you have a whole new world of knitting to explore---booties, blankets, toys.

Yay!

Yippee!! (it's amazing how hard it is to hold one's tongue, even in the cyber world)

I can't wait to see all the new projects you're bound to come up with. :)

Again, congrats to you and D. I'm glad that everything seems to be going okay so far.

Thanks, everybody :) I guess I was kinda obvious, huh? I think it's going to be a girl. But I don't know for sure yet.

It's weird about the knitting - I think the motion of the needles makes me nauseous? But hopefully I'll be able to do it again one of these days.

hooray!!!! what exciting news! :-) I'm sending you well wishes from across the country! Although I don't get why you can't have cheese? Did I miss something? I could not give up cheese!

I can't believe it's been 12 weeks. That's what's blowing my mind.

Sit back, relax, and eat some potato chips. You deserve it! :)

Also, that last disclaimer sounds very lawyerly. You can take the girl from the law, but you can't take the...

Eh, never mind. ;)

Leah - Thanks!

Amy - I can have some cheese, just not the soft, unpasteurized kind. Feta, brie, goat, blue and gorgonzola are bad - they can cause listeriosis, an infection pregnant women are more susceptible to, and it can harm the baby. Fortunately, it is rare - only 1500 cases reported in the US last year - but every pregnant woman is put on "cheese alert" anyway. Cheddar and Muenster and some others are fine.

Liz - thanks :) Sometimes I say to D, "I fought the law and the law won" (like that song). Actually, I just added the disclaimer b/c I've seen Anonymous leaving nasty comments on other blogs lately.

CONGRATULATIONS!! I had a suspicion that might be the news, so I'm glad it was. I'm so excited for you and D! And I'm so glad that all the tests have turned out okay so far, and will continue to, I'm sure. :)

Great news! I too had a feeling. I'm thinking of you.

I, too, suspected, but don't we all? I mean, when a woman says there's something she has news, everyone always assumes it's a baby.

Congrats!

Of course, I have to admit I'm feeling even more pressure to have one of my own now that you have one too! I'll be thinking about June 23 for him/her, since that's my birthday :)

Kitkat - so you can share a birthday :) We were shooting for June, too, b/c I thought I'd avoid most of the heat of summer, and be able to take the baby out in the stroller after s/he was born.

That's a great time of year to have a baby. My kid's birthdays are the end of June and beginning of July. You don't have to endure the hot summer months and be miserable. And the baby will be out of the newborn stage once the flu season hits.

Three cheers from London!!! I can't wait to congratulate you in person. See you (two) soon.

P - thanks :) See you soon. Kind of cool that someone in England knows I'm pregnant. I won't say "on the other side of the pond." ;)

Katie, Congratulations! This is such amazing news! Since I live here, I volunteer myself as your first babysitter. I hope Patrick and I can take you and david out for a celebratory non-cheese smoke-free meal. xx Lauren

Congrats! This is great news.

My younger sister just gave birth three weeks ago. So I know about her odd cravings and the trials you are about to embark on.

I hope you enjoy it.
