Dessert hierarchy

D and I stopped at the Hungarian bakery tonight. It's actually featured in the novel Model Student...the protagonist went to Columbia and ate there. Anyway, my favorite thing to get there is the lemon petit four. It's big enough to share, which we did. And I remember once I got it when we were with MF, and I waxed so enthusiastic about it that he said, "It's a petit five!"

Another dessert memory: in high school, a group of friends and I went to the Sylvan Street Grille (in Massachusetts). Tantalized by the dessert menu, we decided to return someday and order every dessert on the menu. Sadly, we never did this. (Actually, it's probably a good thing...we would have been sick.)

This brings me to the dessert hierarchy. I bet every woman has one (unless you are equal opportunity). Mine is as follows:

Pie - not so much, except apple and pumpkin on special occasions. Blueberry pie = meh.

Brownies - good.

Cake - good, unless it's chocolate.

Italian-style cookies - meh.

Chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies - good.

Solid chocolate dessert - no.

Dessert with chocolate accent - ok.

Anything with jelly in it - no.

Most fruit crisps or cobblers - good if I'm in the mood, but I prefer more texture.

Anything mushy (custard, etc.) - no.

Cannoli - can be good.

Tiramisu - OD'd on it a number of years ago; tend to avoid.

Ice cream - good, but I can do without. It's the texture thing.

Oh, and my favorite sweet thing - French toast at La Grainne.

What's your dessert hierarchy?

You might like my molten chocolate cakes. They're made in individual ramekins, so your portion size is limited. I'm not a fan of super chocolatey desserts, but everyone loves these. Serve with a dallop of real whipped cream on top and a little shaved milk chocolate, so it melts down through the cake. Mmmm...

(I once told my friend that whipped cream was my favorite food.

"It's not a food, it's a topping!" she argued.)

I like sorbet for dessert, especially if they have orange. I also like panna cotta.

that does sound like an interesting chocolate expedition!

i went through a major sorbet kick a few years ago, and experienced withdrawal as with the tiramisu. i do like it, though.

a copy of The Whole World Over is already waiting for me at the library! i guess the fact they had 142 copies didn't hurt.

There's one restaurant in NYC where they serve tangerine sorbet in a hollowed-out tangerine :) Same with pineapple.

Cake is almost always on the top of the hierarchy.

I like a Boston Cream Cake best. Something about that pudding in the middle makes it soooooo good.

If it's pie, apple. Apple crisp is better.

Deep fried ice cream is yummy too.

Now I'm starting to have cravings.

Mmmmm, cake.

I don't think I have a dessert hierarchy. Just regular dessert preferences. lol

At the top for me is anything with a chocolate/raspberry combo. Cake, candies, whatever.

Pie and cheesecake are the bottom.

I think the best thing I've ever tasted was chocolate croissants in France (regular croissants with chocolate chips/swirls in them).

There ARE NO Boston Cream donuts out here. There's not a Dunkin Donuts in sight! Grrrrrr.

This is stupid, as the same company owns Taco Bell and Dunkin Donuts. You can't swing a cat without hitting a Taco Bell.

We have Krispy Kremes. They are not all that.

But since I haven't had a donut in at least four months, I need not be getting my panties in a bunch.

I love them all! Ice cream! Cake! Donuts! Pie! Crisps!

My current favorite actual healthy dessert to make for the family is chunky cinnamon apples. No measuring necessary. Grab a bunch of apples. Chop them and toss em in a pot. Throw in some sugar, not too much. Dump in lots of cinnamon. Cover with water. Boil until the apples get soft. Yum!

So where's this molten chocolate cake recipe?

That sounds really good...and healthy!

Maybe we'll see the molten chocolate on Liz's blog someday ;)

Ahhhhh, dessert!

I can skip the main course, just leave the dessert for me...if it has chocolate!

But really now, how can ice cream be at the lower level of your hierarchy?! ;p
