Beginnings of a scarf

I got some cotton-candy-colored acrylic yarn today...it's supposed to be good for people with sensitivity to wool. I've learned to cast on with some proficiency (that's basically the beginning of a scarf), although knitting itself is harder. I kept dropping stitches (a phrase I never really understood before) but it becomes clear when all your yarn slides off the needle!

Also, knitting is a workout. I taught a yoga class today, but knitting is definitely harder on your shoulders. Maybe I will develop new "knitting muscles."

I'm a little irritated by the concept of holidays. I don't think you should be forced to celebrate anything. Or maybe I'm just becoming Scrooge-like in my dotage.

Anyway, here's a picture of where I'll start tomorrow:

Fantastic choice of colour. I once knitted a little yellow rabbit and I remember the satisfaction of watching it come together, it was so wonderful.

Maybe I should take it up again, with two cats in the house to chase the ball of yarn around, I'm almost all set already.

Happy Valnetine's, I hope you have a lovely dinner :)

Ooooo...how exciting! I think it's always fun to learn a new hobby. I can't wait to see it!

Yay! Welcome to the wonderfully addictive world of knitting. Soon your stash will overflow and you'll have more works-in-progress on your needles than you'll ever know what to do with!

One hint: You might want to try wood needles. They are a little more expensive, but the yarn doesn't slide off of them as much.

Good luck!

Good luck on the first project. :)

WG - thanks! that sounds really cute with the cats. happy v-day to you too.

elsa - well (gulp) it doesn't really look like a scarf yet. i'm still better at casting on than the actual knitting, so i signed up for a class. i'm looking forward to it!

lisa - thanks for the tip! in the book i'm reading, the author recommends bamboo needles...now i know why.

amy & roxanne - thanks! i like yummy-sounding colors, too.

Neat! Someone at work offered to teach me how to knit, but I keep forgetting to buy my huge beginner's needles.

A start is a good thing. I've often seen my mother undo an entire night's kknitting because she didn't notice she'd dropped a stich, or something.

Best of luck, and I hope that doesn't happen to you (often).

You just need to relax and the shoulder thing will go away.

And maybe switch to circular needles (it looks like you have a lot of stitches smooshed on there).

I read the post up above that said you're taking a class. It will make all the difference in the world AND you'll love it. I promise.

BC - thanks!

Paula - thanks for the advice. I hope the class will help too :) I'm holding off a bit on knitting till I take the class (a week from today.)

Been thinking on knitting a bit myself, but would have to do it without SLF's knowledge. Mainly because she is really excellent at clothing kinda stuff, and partly because anything I made would probably be for her anyway. But I might yet do it.

You should! Knitting on the sly.
