At Pilates today, my teacher explained that before she moved in with her boyfriend, she used to sublet her apartment (just for a weekend or week) when she went away, and make $150-$300 a night. She found subletters through Craigslist. Part of me thinks this is a smart, enterprising idea; the other part of me envisions the scene in every teen movie (Shag, Girls Just Want to Have Fun) where the party crashers burst through the plate glass window (miraculously, no one is injured, despite the shards of glass flying everywhere) and trash the place thoroughly (top to bottom). Sometimes they even chant, "PURPLE JESUS." In short, I don't want to open our home to hooligans.

Netflix continues to supply us with an array of movies. Last night we watched A Midsummer Night's Sex Dream, which was kind of disappointing. It was Woody Allen's take on the Shakespeare play. I read in Wikipedia that the Mia Farrow role was intended for Diane Keaton, so I just kind of sulked throughout and thought how Diane would have done a better job. Also, it wasn't clear what time period it was set in. That annoyed me. D liked it, however.

I might also see Because I Said So, which is opening this weekend.

I love Diane Keaton, have I mentioned that? I want to be just like her when I grow up.

I remember reading about the subletting idea in the Post a while back. I think I would be reluctant to let strangers stay in my house, too.

The subletting would attract me just for the mere fact of earning some extra bucks while on vacation. I think I would also get scared off by all of the potential creeps. I wouldn't want to give anyone the opportunity to rifle through my drawers.

She is fabulous :)

oddly enough, the pilates teacher said everyone treated her apartment "beautifully." but i'm not sure if i'm trusting enough...i know from my first/only experience living with roommates in NY that there are some freaks out there!

I'm not a fan of Woody Allen at all. I don't know if it's that I don't get his humor, or if it's because he comes across a little to whiny and neurotic for my tastes (I never cared for comedian Richard Lewis either, and his neurotic schtick is somewhat reminiscent of Allen's).

There is one exception, The Purple Rose of Cairo which I thoroughly enjoyed. I think I liked it because Allen wasn't in it, he just wrote and directed it.

The worst movie Allen has ever done was Match Point which was just a blatant plagiarism of elements of both Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy and Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment.

Suzy - will do :)

Perplexio - I'm actually a big fan, though I like some of his movies better than others. I enjoyed Match Point. I thought it echoed his prior film, Crimes and Misdemeanors, but I didn't mind.

I think Because I Said So may be about my mother.

We couldn't rent our house for the weekend. They might find my chocolate stash. That would be bad.

You inspired my next entry!

You could keep the stash under lock and key.

D points out that the co-op board would kill us if we subletted.

I'm with you: I'd be creeped out having total strangers staying in my house. It's one thing if you rent long-term. There are checks and balances that allow the landlord to ensure that he/she isn't opening the door to total freaks.

But when they come in for a night or two or three, you just never know. I'd pass and try to find some other way to make up the dough.

Then again, I don't live in a city where cupboard-sized apartments rent for more than I spent on my first very used car.
