The Pile

The newest books! The top one is written by Allison Winn Scotch, whose previous novel had a Sliding Doors premise: she was able to go back and do it over again, try it differently, and see the results. So that was intriguing. So far, her new book is good, though I can't really tell what it's about yet.

The Girl on the Fridge is a short story collection. I usually prefer novels, but the stories are spiky and interesting.

Yoga for People Who Can't Be Bothered to Do It looks funny. It's apparently a travelogue of sorts, though the write-up says it is "unclassifiable." I got it at Spoonbill and Sugartown, a bookstore in Brooklyn that is a bit unclassifiable in its own right. I always see books I have never heard of before when I am there. They also have two cats, though one was in hiding.

Hothouse Flower looks like another travelogue, though fictional.

I do read fast, but I don't read every book in each pile. I only read two books in the huge library pile, for example. I might read every book in this pile, just cause they all look good.

When I lived in Philly I took the train to work. I loved it because it gave me so much time to read. I got so much reading done on the train.

I remain envious of your mad book-reading skills. I've had a Carl Hiaasen book from the library sitting on my coffee table for a couple weeks. I renewed it once, but I remain on page 3.

I was wondering what that was. I thought it was Spanish, but I never took it. Carl Hiaasen has a new book coming out, I think - Star Girl.

Vegetable personalities

At the risk that you'll all think I'm nuts...but heck. I was getting cauliflower ready for dinner and it occurred to me that vegetables have different personalities. In my mind, anyway. Zucchini: the most agreeable of vegetables. It blends in with everyone, but it's never obsequious or false to itself. Sweet potatoes: the grandmother of vegetables. Very cozy and welcoming. happy birthday e!

[Posted by Bearette's husband until she has Internet access] e was born today! 8 pounds even, a cute and healthy baby boy. He likes to stick out his tongue just a little, and move his mouth around. The hospital gave him a little white hat with a purple pom pom. Bearette is tired but happy. Pictures soon.

Eventful

A lot has happened today already. I went to meet D for lunch and along the way I spotted a Boston terrier -- one blue eye, one brown. I stooped to pat it and then I heard an ear-bruising screech!! Everyone's head whipped around. Even the dog jumped. A taxi had squealed to a halt and there was a delivery boy on its hood. Somebody yelled, "Call an ambulance!" The boy seemed fine, even hopping on his bike to finish his deliveries -- but everyone persuaded him to stay. I took out my cell phone but another woman was already giving details to 911. After the woman finished the call, I was satisfied that help was on its way, so I continued. There were a bunch of rubberneckers/supporters gathered around the boy, so he wasn't alone. The dog stayed too. I was shaken by this, of course, but then something amusing happened.
