The kids are driving up to New York for the 4th of July weekend. I’ll be flying. When I planned the trip, I thought it would be cooler than Florida. It will actually be hotter, going into the triple digits on some days. So I feel a bit foolish. But we will be going to California from NYC in mid-July, and that is reliably cooler.

Eric and I had a great time in Europe. Zoe (who wants to be called Chris now) was unable to come because of a broken ankle. Eric and I swam in the Aegean Sea and saw Harry Styles in concert (a fun sing-along). I’m still on the fence about whether to move back to NYC in 2029 (when Chris graduates) or stay in Florida. NYC is much cheaper for me because I only pay maintenance on the apartment there, instead of full rent. But Florida lets you avoid the winter. I haven’t really put roots down there, though anything can change, I suppose. Maybe I could go there for the winter…

Love this update. Sorry about Chris' ankle -and missing out on the Aegean Sea! What a fun time for you & Eric. NY/FL - I'm guessing you'll move back. Can't picture otherwise.

At the risk that you'll all think I'm nuts...but heck. I was getting cauliflower ready for dinner and it occurred to me that vegetables have different personalities. In my mind, anyway. Odds and ends

Hello, blog world. I guess there was a little decrease in excitement after seeing Madonna...but I will see what I can come up with for you. PUPKIN. Pupkin is a small dog, very feisty and cute, that I have fallen in love with. She lives at Groom-a-Rama, a pet store on 6th Ave where I go to ogle the puppies in the window. Yesterday they were all exceptionally cute and I wished I had my camera. But I'm afraid the flash might freak them out anyway. Pupkin's collar says she is a female, red-brown Shorkie Tzu (after a moment's thought, I figured out she's a Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix). Pupkin is very lively; she likes to nibble the other puppies' ears and roll around with them. She also licks the inside of the window glass, trying to lick my fingers. One of those old men who likes to narrate (you know what I mean, don't you?) was standing nearby, saying, "Look at these girls who just want to sleep [indicating a pair of serene cream-colored bulldogs with beautiful eyes]....

All right, I'm just going to spit it out. My news = I'm pregnant. 12 weeks today. Made it through the first trimester, some scary genetic testing, and now I just have my Down test to get through. If that goes well (it's a two-part test that takes a few weeks), I think I can finally relax. My odds are low. The test was optional so I seriously considered not taking it, but every single person whose advice I sought said she would take it, so I'll do it. It's funny, I watched Rosemary's Baby last night (I've seen it before, but now I'm watching it with new eyes) and I couldn't help spotting all the infractions. She drank a shake with raw egg every day, drank some champagne when she got pregnant, and her husband smoked Pall Malls around her. I guess there are tradeoffs. My mother's pregnancies sound entirely more relaxed than mine -- she smoked*, drank* (in moderation) and she didn't know what listeria* was. In other words, she could eat as much f...
