Our last San Fran supper

Today was a mellow day. I had yogurt and granola at this cafe on 901 Columbus. Then we walked to the fisherman's wharf area (i.e., tourist heaven) to get chocolates from Ghirardelli, as a thank-you to J for writing my yoga recommendation. I also got Summer Boys 2 and 44 Scotland Street at the bookstore so I wouldn't be caught short on the plane. I also bought Rachael Ray's 30-minute vegetarian cookbook. I know she is an object of scorn among many chefs but the meals look good and fast. So why not? I have already dog-eared a number of them.

We had dinner at Thep Phanom, a really good Thai resto near Haight Street. The waiters were decked out in bright yellow pantaloons that stopped just below the knee and tropical shirts. The one who seated us took me aback because his top looked like a sundress I used to have: navy background with yellow sunflowers. It was a very secure-in-his-masculinity getup.

I had crispy tofu with peanut sauce and cucumbers, and then lemongrass tofu with mixed veg for my entree. We split a sauteed banana with caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Along Market Street they have pastel profiles of women from the 19th century who were pickpockets. My favorite is Rose Cady. Her victims were all married men.

I'm a little sad to be returning to NYC, but I'm looking forward to cooking again.

Oh, and for a fun read, I recommend Summer Boys by Hailey Abbott. D keeps calling it "kiddie porn" because of the cover, but it's just a nice fun YA book.

R Rae may not be considered a real chef, but I like a lot of her recipes. They're great for weeknights.

I agree...if you're talking about the Veggie Meals book, I'd recommend the Pumpkin and Black Bean Soup (I make this constantly during the winter) and the Sicilian Eggplant Marinara over Penne (the sauce freezes well, and we often reheat and and serve over fresh ravioli).

Vegetable personalities

At the risk that you'll all think I'm nuts...but heck. I was getting cauliflower ready for dinner and it occurred to me that vegetables have different personalities. In my mind, anyway. Zucchini: the most agreeable of vegetables. It blends in with everyone, but it's never obsequious or false to itself. Sweet potatoes: the grandmother of vegetables. Very cozy and welcoming. The return of Rudolph

Rudolph is our small furry friend, whom I've never seen. He visited the kitchen last night while D was up late. I know this because: 1) A large sonic device is plugged in right in front of the crack between the oven and the wall. The sonic devices in the living room have kept Rudolph away from there, his previous hideaway. Apparently the cracks between appliances and the wall are harder to reach. 2) The mop has been moved from the hall closet to the kitchen closet. This means D tried to capture Rudolph. 3) A turtle magnet I haven't seen in a while is now on the fridge. That means it fell behind the oven and D found it during his interactions with Rudolph. (I am praying hard that Rudolph is a boy, since we don't want to find many small Rudolphs.) What makes me feel better about this whole thing is that mice are apparently everywhere this winter; even my brother has had problems with them. happy birthday e!

[Posted by Bearette's husband until she has Internet access] e was born today! 8 pounds even, a cute and healthy baby boy. He likes to stick out his tongue just a little, and move his mouth around. The hospital gave him a little white hat with a purple pom pom. Bearette is tired but happy. Pictures soon.
